Civil Society Coalition on Sustainable Development (CSCSD)

Civil Society Coalition on Sustainable Development (CSCSD) is a coalition of over 2000 registered civil society and non-governmental organisations and individuals committed to citizens’ empowerment, human rights protection, development and peace in Nigeria.

It is the only registered national coalition of organisations purposely created to be working on the monitoring of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals across the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria. We have a cordial working relationship with the government of Nigeria as we are a member of the Core Working Group on Nigerian VNR/HLPF.

Creating awareness at all levels of Nigeria, down to the very nooks and crannies of the country, our overall objective is to support, contribute and strengthen the capacity of civil society and other SDGs stakeholders to work on issues of transparency, accountability and participation in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and integration of 2063 Agenda.

CSCSD’s VISION: a society whose centre-stage is justice, peace, fulfilment of human rights and development in all ramifications.

MISSION: CSCSD, in partnership with other civil society, the poor and the marginalized, the donors, the development partners, and the international community, aims to pressure governments and other stakeholders to account for the SDGs and give the lives of people a meaning through upholding justice, human rights and development.

Vision and work in relation to the Global Forum

CSCSD is a coalition of various organizations that think globally but act locally in supporting the stakeholders to attain SDGs by 2030.

We believe in the maxim that no one should be left behind which is why our activities are tailored to different sectors of the economy including government at all levels, private sectors, development partners, professional bodies, NGOs, CBOs, faith-based, minority and marginalised people including those with disability, vulnerable women and youth.

We have carried out a number of activities reflecting our belief in a multi-stakeholder approach to development. For example, our multi-stakeholder policy/advocacy training involving a youth group, CDA, CISGHAN, CPN, and a Human Rights Group, CSCSD. The topics were shrinking civic space and enabling environment for CSOs, monitoring EDC principles and implementation. As a result:

  • CSOs becoming more enlightened about the different scales of shrinking space for them and how to tackle the issue
  • many more civil society organisations engaging in shrinking civic space advocacy, and advancing activism on a CSO enabling environment in Nigeria
  • an increase in new sectoral/constituency groups (such as Youth group, CDA, CISGHAN, CPN, Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, Human Rights Group, and CSCSD) joining CPDE Nigeria.

Bringing together voices from different sections of society

We bring voices together through the use of social media, traditional media, workshops and small meetings.

At the country level, we are raising awareness through social media using Twitter, Facebook, web updates, WhatsApp etc. We also use traditional media (newspapers) to raise awareness. A one-day training was held for sectoral and constituency groups of more than 40 participants on the topic of capacity building to address shrinking CSO spaces. The aim was to make attendees more enlightened about different scales of shrinking space and how to tackle them. The training also strengthened their skills in conducting action, mass mobilization, and other activities geared at influencing relevant official policies, programmes or processes.
