Our membership

Global Forum members are national-level organisations, such as councils, commissions and similar multi-stakeholder advisory bodies, who bring together voices from different sections of society to act as a constructive friend to their governments on the issue of sustainable development.

Who are the members of the Global Forum?

SDG councils, commissions and similar multi-stakeholder advisory bodies take a wide variety of forms (closely linked to national governance architectures for SDG delivery) - examples include:

  • multi stakeholder partnerships that engage civil society, the private sector and academia
  • umbrella organisations for a group of organisations from one sector
  • units within a government that fulfil an SDG coordination function.

What do such councils, commissions and similar advisory bodies do?

They act as a key national advisory group to their country’s governing bodies on the achieving of global sustainability, particularly through the SDGs. They promote and support national-level multi-stakeholder engagement in their government’s planning, implementation and reporting of the SDGs. This activity takes on many forms, depending on local scenarios and needs, some examples include:

  • leading campaigns
  • implementing agreed measures
  • co-ordinating and uniting local activities for national coverage
  • supporting data collection and monitoring for the SDGs
  • strengthening local citizen science for SDGs
  • mobilizing key actors
  • bringing parties with conflicting interests together to seek resolutions and consensus
  • performing a ‘compass’ function to assist parties to navigate through an SDG pathway.

Accelerated knowledge exchange in partnership

By bringing together the key actors of each nation striving to achieve the SDGs, the Global Forum is able to harness the greater influence and knowledge of an international collective body.

Governments can access the collective expertise that the Global Forum is harnessing for the benefit of their own nation by adopting, adapting or learning from experiences and activities in other nations.

With its rich pool of collective knowledge, the Global Forum invites stakeholders and governments around the globe to adapt, implement and jointly accelerate the delivery of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs.
