2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development National Council - Executive Secretariat

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development National Council (National Council), which was created in 2017, is the enabling body  where representatives from the government, including sub-national governments, the private sector, civil society, and academia gather with the main purpose of co-ordinating actions related to the design, implementation, and evaluation of strategies, policies, programmes, and actions regarding the 2030 Agenda.

The National Council considers the establishment of the Executive Secretariat, located in the Ministry of Economy, to follow up on the agreed activities. 

The mission of the Executive Secretariat is to address the 2030 Agenda as a long-term commitment of the country, beyond different government administrations, and to gather all sectors of society around a common objective.

The main activities of the Executive Secretariat is to co-ordinate the work of the National Council and support the supervision of its activities. It also proposes the specific topics to be addressed, and creates work committees to tackle them.

Vision and work in relation to the Global Forum

As a convener, the Executive Secretariat drives the dialogue and knowledge-sharing with governmental and non-governmental actors. Besides academia, civil society organisations, and the private sector, the Executive Secretariat has strengthened ties with youth movements, unions, and actors within the framework of the social economy (co-operatives).

With regards to data collection and analysis, SDG Specialized Technical Committee works together with the Executive Secretariat to monitor the implementation of SDGs in Mexico.

The Executive Secretariat has also contributed to different areas of the Global Forum, particularly on the theme of governance the promotion of  localisation of SDGs, and on capacity development for sub-national governments in implementing the 2030 Agenda.

Bringing together voices from different sections of society

The Executive Secretariat supports the National Council mainly through the work committees – namely on well-being, economy, environment, and monitoring and strategy. These committees gather representatives from the academia, private sector, civil society, and the government with the accompaniment and joint work with other institutions that support the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

Within these committees, all members  discuss relevant topics that will contribute to the advancement of the SDGs in the three main axes of sustainable development, taking into consideration the different contexts and social situations across the country.
